Postgraduate Admissions

All Postgraduate candidates must be:

  • graduates of an approved university;
  • persons holding such other suitable qualifications and/or experience as the Board for Graduate Studies and Research may approve

Graduate Certificates, Diplomas, Taught Masters or DM degree candidates must:

  • have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or a Lower Second Class Honours degree or its equivalent in the relevant or an analogous subject area
  • be expected to satisfy the particular Faculty/Departmental requirements before beginning graduate study

MPhil  and MFA degree candidates must have:

  • a minimum GPA of 3.0 or an Upper Second Class Honours degree or its equivalent

PhD and MD degree candidates must have:

(a)   approved graduate degrees awarded primarily for research;
(b)   a taught Masters degree from the UWI or another approved University, provided that the Masters programme included a research component of at least 25% of the total credit rating and the applicant achieved at least a B+ average or its equivalent;
(c)   approval of upgrade application;
(d)   other such qualifications and experience as the Board for Graduate Studies and Research may approve

  6. Professional Certificates/Diplomas obtained from institutions other than UWI
  7. Official Transcripts (sent directly from granting institution to PGTranscripts@sta.uwi.edu). You are required to notify our Office if the name on your official transcript is different from the name on your application.

Entry Requirements:

  • Passes in a minimum of three (3) subjects:
    • CSEC (CXC) General Proficiency level in Grades I or II and from 1998, Grade III or GCE O’Levels including Grades A, B or C or equivalent in Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject (Physics or Chemistry or Integrated Science) or Technical Drawing or Additional Mathematics or Industrial Technology.
    • Persons possessing Full Craft/Pre-Technician certificates such as the National Examination Council (NEC) and the Trinidad and Tobago National Vocational Qualification (TTNVQ) with Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject (Physics or Chemistry) or Technical Drawing or Industrial Technology.
    • Other suitable combination of qualifications and/or experience will be considered.

Mature Entry:

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to a programme, based on years of experience and the ability to handle the level of programme learning, may be accepted as a mature student. The applicant would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed, by the UTT Programme Leader or designate, as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to enable him/her to successfully participate in the programme.
