Admission Requirements for Full Status

Special Admissions-Non-degree Applicants

If you are an international student who is able to meet normal matriculation requirements but you are not seeking to study at the UWI, Mona Campus on Exchange, Study Abroad or the Medical Elective programme, then you may be admitted to the UWI, Mona under Special Admissions. The Vice Chancellor may admit as specially admitted students to the university such persons that are deemed fit for limited periods, once they qualify for Special Admissions.

You can qualify for Special Admission if:

  • you are registered at another University and wish to follow courses at UWI by special arrangement for credits at your own University.
  • You are sponsored by your Government or employer to read certain courses– not for credit towards a University qualification, but under a special arrangement.
  • You are a UWI graduate wishing to pursue a specific course/s to equip yourself for a particular job; increase your efficiency in the performance of a job, satisfy entry requirements to a programme at The UWI or in another institution; or update or improve your knowledge in a subject.
  • Normally, a specially admitted student will be allowed to take no more than 12 credits in an academic year, and no more than a total of 24 credits.
  • Specially admitted students are permitted to write examinations in the courses for which they have registered.

What criteria will be used to assess my application?  

  • To be considered for entry as “specially admitted students”, applicants should normally be able to meet the matriculation requirements. 
  • Those students who do not satisfy the requirements for entry to the University should provide satisfactory evidence of their previous studies. In appropriate cases they may be required to sit for special entrance examination. In the assessment of the qualifications due allowance should be made for their maturity.
  • A specially admitted student can be allowed to take no more than 12 credits in any given year also nor more than a total of 24 credits under this category of registration.
  • Applications for special permission must be made on the appropriate forms.

Three Years (without Teacher Training) Full-Time

(Limited options: History, English Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies/Geography and Language Education: Literacy Studies)

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O’Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) including English Language AND two double Units Cape subjects or 2 GCE A-Level subjects in relevant area
  • Two Years Full-Time or Three Years Part-Time (Teacher Trained) Teachers’ College Certificate in relevant area + 4 GCE (A-C)/CXC grades (I-III) including English Language OR
  • Three years Secondary Teachers’ College Diploma in relevant area + English Language

Humanities-based (B.A.)

Three Years Full-Time

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O’Level / BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) including English Language AND two double Units CAPE subjects or 2 GCE A-Level subjects (one of which must be a Humanities subject for which courses are taught at the University). Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S.) / Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.)/ Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M)

Five years Full-Time (applicants must be at least 18 years old in year of admission)

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O’Levels/ BGCSE (Grades A-C) in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics AND Three double Units CAPE subjects or 3 A- Level subjects including Chemistry, Biology and any other subject.

NOTE: Physics and Mathematics are compulsory at the CSEC/BGCSE level, whereas Biology and Chemistry are compulsory at CAPE/A-Levels

  • UWI Introductory year in Science & Technology Courses in Biology, Chemistry and one other OR Triple Major Associate from an approved community colleges degree majoring in Biology, Chemistry and one other subject with GPA greater than 3.5.
  • Equivalent qualifications (as determined from transcripts).

Non-Academic Considerations

  • All candidates are required to submit a short autobiographic sketch outlining the reasons for their career choice (300 words or less) Candidates must also produce evidence of their involvement in relevant extra-curricular/co-curricular activities, socially-oriented projects and voluntary community service in the year prior to their application.

B.Sc. Diagnostic Imaging (Radiography)

Three years Full-Time

Six CSEC subjects, (General Proficiency Grades 1-III or equivalents) in English Language, Mathematics or Physics, Biology or Human and Social Biology, one other science subject in addition to two other subjects.

Applicant must attend an interview.

B.Sc. Nursing

Four Years Full-Time (applicants should be at least 17 years old at the time of admission)

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O’Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) which must include English Language, Biology/Integrated Science/Human and Social Biology, Mathematics and two other approved subjects AND Two double Units at CAPE (one subject from Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and one subject from any of the other subject areas, as specified by the Nursing Council of Jamaica).
  • Applicants may be required to attend an interview.

B.Sc. Physical Therapy

Three Years Full-Time (applicants should be at least 18 years old at time of admission)

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O’Level /BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) which must include English Language, Mathematics and Biology AND Two double Units CAPE subjects or 2 A- Level subjects, chosen from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology.
  • Complete 60 voluntary hours in a Physical Therapy facility at the time of admission; at least 30 of which must be spent in a general hospital. Candidate must make their own arrangements for doing voluntary hours Applicant must attend an interview.

Bachelor of Basic Medical Sciences (BBMedSci)

Three years Full-Time

(Options: Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology and Pharmacology)

  • Five CSEC (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O’Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics AND Two double Units CAPE subjects or 2 A- Level subjects chosen from Chemistry, Biology/Zoology, Physics/Mathematics OR UWI Preliminary Pure and Applied Science Courses – Chemistry, Life Sciences, Physics, Mathematics OR Equivalent qualifications (as determined from transcripts).

Four Years Part-Time

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) or GCE O’Level / BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) with compulsory English Language and Mathematics.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE: English Language is compulsory for admission to all programmes of The University of the West Indies. Candidates who do not possess a Grade 1 in CSEC English A, a Grade A in GCE O’Level / BGCSE English Language, Grade 1or 2 in CAPE Communication Studies or a Grade A in the GCE General Paper, are required to take an English Language Proficiency Test on entry.
