University of Papua New Guinea Admission Requirements

Undergraduate Admissions

Applications are invited from candidates intending to seek enrolment or re-enrolment into undergraduate degree and diploma programs that are offered by the University to study in “FACE TO FACE” mode at Waigani campus.

The University will consider applications from the following categories of candidates:

Non-School Leavers

  • Candidates who have completed diploma programs at recognized institutions within the country or overseas;
  • Candidates who have met the National Matriculation Requirements from recognized National and Secondary High Schools or that equivalent level prior to 2018;
  • Candidates applying for specific programs that are on offer and are related to their current employment;
  • Non-Nationals (South Pacific Islanders and other non-nationals) may apply. Admission will depend on the availability of places within the quota that has been reserved for overseas students; and
  • Re-enrolling students.

School Leavers

  • PNG students currently undertaking Grade 12 studies at National and Secondary Schools and those completing Year 12 in overseas countries such as Australia and New Zealand will be issued appropriate forms by their schools to complete at the end of the year. Queries regarding this arrangement should be directed to the Selection Unit of the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (DHERST); and
  • Grade 12 students from other Pacific Countries, such as Solomon Islands, should complete the normal Application for Enrolment/Forms. Their admission into undergraduate programs will depend on the quota for Non-Nationals.

Postgraduate (Diplomas, Masters and PhD) Admissions

  • Read carefully and fill the form clearly in black or blue ink using CAPITAL letters.
  • Your application should be supported by documentary evidence of your Academic
  • Transcripts of Under graduate qualifications, copies of Diploma or Degree certificate(s),
  • Study Proposal and any other supporting documents and letters.
  • Documents must be certified as true copies of the originals.
  • A K50.00 Application Fee, in the form of receipt must be submitted with this application.
  • This can be paid into UPNG’s General Account No. 1000583572 BSP, Waigani Branch.
  • Incorrect filling of the form will result in automatic disqualification of the application by
  • the Enrolment Officer.
  • Please attach a full description of the program you proposed to do or enroll in at this
  • university. Discuss the program in detail with your (prospective) supervisors before
  • finalizing the program of study you will undertake. Your proposal and later substantial
  • amendments if any, must be approved and signed by at least one of the supervisors.
  • If you are not sure your qualifications are suitable, contact the Admissions Office before you apply
  • or go to the UPNG website https://www.upng.ac.pg/ and check the entry requirements.

 Important to Note

  1. To check for programmes on offer, eligibility and selection criteria, go to the School of your interest and confirm. School of Business and Public Policy (SBPP) has closed receiving PG applications.
  2. Two forms are available for download. Applicants for the Honours programmes should use the honours application form and all other higher degree programme applicants (Post Graduate Diplomas, Masters and PhD) will use the other form, the higher degree form.
  3. Download the correct form (honours/Masters/PhD) and fill in clearly with blue or black ink, attach all required documents and send it to: The Senior Assistant Registrar, (Enrolments), University of Papua New Guinea, P O Box 320, UNIVERSITY, NCD.
  4. Application forms fee: The Honours form fee is K20.00 and Post Graduate Diploma, Masters and Doctor of Philosophy form fee is K50.00. Pay to BSP: UPNG General Account: 1000583572 and attach the receipt to the form when submitting.
  5. Your application will be received and sent to the Schools to determine eligibility and admission.
  6. Decision to accept and admit candidates to programs will be based on eligibility to undertake post graduate studies; but subject to the Schools available resources to manage and supervise.
  7.  Successful applicants will be notified through email and by post in mid-January 2022.
  8. The University does not offer scholarships. It is your responsibility to seek sponsorship.
