University of Lilongwe Admission Requirements (2024 intake)
Academic Calendar: Spring semester (January – April); Summer semester (May-August); Fall semester (September-December)
The M.Sc. Program in Applied and Development Economics consists 8 courses (minimum 25 credit hours) and Master’s Thesis with 12 credit hours (total 36 credits) in line with most MSc programs in North America (Canada and US), as well as in SADC and COMESA regions.
Both programmes have six elective courses to diversify students’ knowledge and to widen professional skills and working opportunities.
University of Lilongwe Admission Requirements
The general admission requirements for the M.Sc. program in Applied and Development Economics is the successful completion of academic requirements of the B.Sc. degree in Economics, or related fields and the fulfilment of other admission criteria of the University of Lilongwe. Graduates in other fields of social Sciences such as Agribusiness, Accounting, Law, Psychology, Political sciences, History, etc. are eligible for admission upon the completion of one semester (equivalent) preparatory or bridging courses at UNILIL.
The Graduate School requires a minimum undergraduate CGPA of 2.6 (on a 4.0 scale) or at least 65% for admission into this program. The University may also consider lesser qualification if the applicant demonstrates sufficient work experiences in the relevant field and industry. For those who have undergraduate CGPA between 2.5 and 2.59, they can be admitted after passing bridging courses (2 to 4 courses) as assigned following department recommendations based on the student background and course deficiencies, as well as, work experiences.
If English is not the first language, the student may need to undertake an approved English language test such as TOEFL with a minimum of 300 points out of 500 (minimum 60%).
However, the student may also discuss the available options with the university academic advisor or registrar.
Distribution of Courses by Year and Semester
The MSc program completion is spread of two years. The first year mainly concentrates on course work (studying both core and elective courses) and the second year is normally assigned for research, thesis write-up and defense.

University of Lilongwe Scholarship
The University of Lilongwe offers the following scholarship scheme;
- First year applicants who did exceptionally well in their MSCE/O Levels (15 points and below) shall be offered 20% scholarship on tuition fee.
- Degree completion applicants who did exceptionally well in their diploma studies 20% scholarship on tuition fee.
- All students appearing on the Dean’s list shall be given 50% scholarship for the next Semester.
