The University of Balamand was founded as an independent non-profit institution for higher education in 1988 by Patriarch Ignatius IV, Patriarch of Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church. Inspired by the Tradition of the Antiochian Christian Orthodox Church in promoting the welfare of humanity and its highest values of tolerance, openness, and compassion; the university welcomes all students and does not discriminate by religion, race, sex, nationality or physical disability.

University of Balamand Admission

Undergraduate Admissions

The criteria for acceptance are the entrance examinations assigned by the University (SAT or other Exams), the secondary school grades, and the class rank.

Admissions Examinations:
SAT is required for all undergraduate applicants holding the Leb​anese Baccalaureate or its equivalence (IB, IGCSE, French Baccalaureate) Except for:

  • – Transfer students from other universities (who completed successfully one year or have 20 transferable credits).
  • – Applicants to majors in the Faculty of Arts & Sciences / Non Scientific Disciplines.
  • – Applicants to majors in the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts – ALBA.
  • – Applicants to majors taught in French.

Applicants to Freshman class:
Applicants should fulfill the following conditions:

  1. Hold a secondary school certificate based on 12 years of schooling, starting with Grade One. This certificate must be awarded by a government or private schools and recognized by the Lebanese Ministry of Education and by the University.
  2. Obtain “permission” from the Equivalence Committee of the Lebanese Ministry of Education allowing them to pursue their higher education on the basis of a foreign program.
  3. Take, prior to their admission, the SAT.
  4. SAT Subject Tests are no longer available after June 2021. New SAT requirements will be published once issued by the Lebanese Ministry of Education.


Sophomore Applicants

Students can apply for admission to the sophomore class at UOB if they hold a Lebanese Baccalaureate or its equivalence, i.e., French Baccalaureate, Syrian Baccalaureate, Jordanian Tawjihi, German Abitur, Official government secondary school leaving Certificate, Full IB Diploma, or IGCSE/GCE (2 A levels or 4 AS levels and 5 O levels).

Starting academic year 2021-2022, holders of General Certificate of Education (GCE) and International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) who completed at least 6 subjects Ordinary level (6 O-Level courses) and 3 A-Level subjects (or equivalent; whereby 1 A-Level = 2 AS Level courses), may also apply for admission to the sophomore class at UOB.

University of Balamand Graduate Admissions

Admission Information
Admission to a degree in the graduate programs is granted through the Office of Admissions and Registration, which receives and processes all applications, evaluates credentials, and issues notification letters. Standards under which students are admitted for study in these programs are established and monitored by the departments and Faculties concerned. Acceptance into the graduate program is based on the candidate meeting University admissions requirements and the recommendation of the Faculty Graduate Admission Committee.

Admission Requirements
Applicants to graduate studies must hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution of higher learning with an undergraduate cumulative average of at least 80/100 or its equivalent as evaluated by the department the applicant wishes to join.

Conditional Admission
An applicant may be admitted conditionally if he has undergraduate cumulative (major and general) averages of at least 75/100 or its equivalent as evaluated by the Department the applicant wishes to join.

Language Proficiency Requirement
Applicants to English-track majors, other than UOB graduates, are required to meet the English Language Proficiency Requirement (a minimum of 600 on the paper-based TOEFL, or 100 on the internet-based TOEFL). Applicants, who score in the range 527 – 597 on the paper-based TOEFL, or 71 – 99 on the internet-based TOEFL, are admitted but must complete the English Language courses (ENGL101/ENGL102) during the first year of enrollment in the graduate program.

Applicants to French-track majors, other than UOB graduates, are required to meet the French language level FREN201 at UOB. A French entrance Exam (Test de positionnement) will determine the language level of the applicant. Applicants with FREN102 level may be accepted however they must complete successfully FREN102 within the first semester of enrollment in the graduate program.
