Sabanci University Admission Requirements for International Students

Undergraduate (For international students) Admission Requirements:

!!! Please make sure you fulfill the application requirements before starting the application process, and keep in mind that the application fee is non-refundable.  

We would like you to know that in case you interrupt the application process, as long as you do not submit the application form, you can return to the relevant pages by using the links that are sent to your e-mail address in the beginning of the process. 

2. The copy of one of the exam/diploma result(s) with a valid score accepted by Sabancı University

Applications, where any of the accepted exams or diplomas are not submitted with a valid score, will not be evaluated.

3. If graduated, High School Diploma (if in another language other than Turkish or English, notarized translation should also be submitted)

4. Official transcript, showing all courses and grades taken in the entire high school education, approved by the high school authority.

Applications without an official transcript are not taken into consideration.

Uploaded transcripts that are without a wet signature and stamp or without an e-signature, which can be verified online, will not be taken into consideration.

5. If taken before, a language proficiency exam score accepted by Sabancı University

6. If the applicant had/continues to have secondary education in Turkey, the following documents are required:

a) Residence Permit Copy for those with foreign nationality

b) Blue Card Copy or Official Letter for Renouncement from Turkish Nationality for those who renounced Turkish citizenship

c) Residence Permit Copy or an official document that shows the date of acquisition of Turkish citizenship (such as Vukuatlı Nüfus Kayıt Örneği or court decision) for those who acquire Turkish citizenship not by birth

7. Turkish citizens or who hold dual citizenship, one of which is citizenship of The Republic of Turkey, who have studied / have been studying outside of Turkey are required to send yurda giriş-çıkış belgesi from e-devlet and passport pages, which proves that they have their secondary school education as formal (not distance education).

2. ADMISSION

A. Assessment of the Results 

Applications will be evaluated by the relevant Faculty Administrative Board. Applicants are informed via e-mail about the progress of the admission process within 2-3 weeks after the online application is submitted. Please do not e-mail the university to ask about the admission decision.  

General Information and Required Documents:

1. Original Test Score/Diploma or its Notarized Copy (SAT, GCE, ACT, etc.). High school diploma should be submitted together with the Original Test Score. SAT must be sent to the University via Collegeboard with the institution code 7100

2. The original of high school diploma or its notarized copy (if in another language other than Turkish or English, notarized translation should also be submitted)

3. High School Diploma Equivalency Certificate from the Turkish Ministry of Education or the Education Attache at the Turkish Embassy

4. Original Transcript or its notarized copy (if in another language other than Turkish or English, notarized translation should also be submitted)

5. Applicant’s passport page which contains the photo (Those who can bring their passport to the SR office during university enrollment dates may upload the photocopies. Otherwise attested by the notary or consulate as “true copy” is needed.)

6. Copy of the visa page of the passport with the stamp indicating the entrance of Turkey

7. Both sided copy of the Residence Permit, if taken before (obtained from Immigration Office)

8. 1 passport size (4.5 x 6 cm) photos (it must be uploaded to online registration system only)

9. Copy of the language proficiency certificate for the students who would like to be exempted from Foundation Development Year (it should be sent to Student Resources via email before the university registration dates and should be uploaded to the online registration form during registration).

10. Notarized Parental Consent Letter for students under the age of 18 taken from both of the parents, stating that their legal guardian “allows them to enroll and study at Sabancı University.”  It must be uploaded to the online registration system and stamped version with wet signature must be handed in person.)

*If you are under the age of 18 and both parents can be physically present during university enrollment, there is no need to provide a Notarized Consent Form. Instead, your parents will provide a written authorization letter.

11. Student Information Form: This online form should be completed by filling out all parts. To be able to fill out the form, it is necessary to create a Sabancı University account. Steps for creating the account will be sent to the students via e-mail before registration.

Note: Additional documents may be requested by the University in addition to the above-mentioned documents.

Certificate of Equivalence

In accordance with the relevant legislation, all international students are required to submit their equivalence documents, along with other registration documents, to the university within the notified dates in order to study in Turkey. 

*Equivalence Certificate: The equivalence certificate shows that your high school diploma and the education you have received are equivalent to Turkish high schools.

Since the process may take some time, we strongly recommend that you start your equivalence application process with the Ministry of National Education or the Educational Attaché of the Turkish Embassy (in your country) immediately after receiving acceptance from the University.

Master (For international students) Admission Requirements:

Application Documents and Requirements

1. Online Application Form: Application should be completed until the deadline. 

2. Official Transcript: An official document issued by the registrar of the candidate’s previous institution showing all courses taken and grades received by the candidate. It should be uploaded under “Documents” in the online application system. The transcript which is obtained from E-government (e-Devlet), Higher Education Council (YÖK) / Transcript Document Inquiry menu is also valid. 

3. Two Letters of Recommendation: The writers of recommendation letters are expected to upload them to the online system. When the application is completed, a link will be emailed to the email addresses indicated in the “Recommenders” section of the online application system for them to upload their recommendation letters.

4. One Photograph: Candidates must upload a passport-sized photo to the online system. 

5. ALES or other similar exams are not required for Masters in Finance (MiF), Professional Business Analytics(MSBA), Executive MBA (EMBA), Professional MBA (PMBA), Master of Science in Marketing (MIM) and Master of Science in Action Research and Transformation (MSART- NT)program applications 

6. English Proficiency Exam Result: As the language of instruction at Sabancı University is English, the applicant is required to submit the score of one of the English proficiency assessment exams. Recognized exams, the minimum score required and period of validity are given in the table below.

After the test date, TOEFL and PTE scores are valid for 2 years; CPE and CAE scores are valid for 3 years; e-YDS and YDS scores are valid for 5 years. 

Applicants who could not submit a valid English Proficiency Exam score at application stage, after completing the application, can take Sabancı University’s own *English Language Assessment Exam (ELAE) in order to be accepted to the graduate program on the condition of obtaining a satisfactory grade in ELAE. ELAE exam is valid for 2 years (2 years must not have expired from the date of the exam to enroll in the program) Those candidates who fail to attend or get a satisfactory score in ELAE exam are obliged to attend and successfully complete a full course of English Language Preparation in order to continue with graduate courses. Failure to complete this course successfully will result in termination of enrollment in a graduate program at Sabancı University.

Graduates of Sabancı University are exempt from submitting an English Proficiency Exam score provided that they apply within 2 years of their graduation. Period between graduation date from the previous program and registration date to the new program should be maximum 2 years. 

*If you submit TOEFL IBT, PTE Academic, CAE or CPE scores and take these exams in Turkey, the exam center must be a state university building. ( According to Article 6.3.d of Instruction letter for Foreign Language Exam Equivalencies issued by the Centre for Selection and Placement of Students). Home edition versions” for external exam documents will not be accepted for English language exemption.

7. Statement of personal and professional purpose: It should be uploaded under “Documents” in the online application system. 

8. Curriculum Vitae: Candidates must submit an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (resume). It should be uploaded under “Documents” in the online application system 

9. Other Requirements: 

  • Master program applicants should have undergraduate diploma, while doctorate program applicants should have undergraduate diploma. 
  • Applicants must complete their previous degree programs by the registration period at the latest. 

Applications should be submitted via online application system only. Applications sent via e-mail cannot be evaluated.

PhD (Doctorate) (For international students) Admission Requirements:

Official Transcript

An official document issued by the registrar of the candidate’s previous institution showing all courses taken and grades received by the candidate. It must be uploaded under “Documents” in the online application system. The transcript which is obtained from E-government (e-Devlet), Higher Education Council (YÖK) / Transcript Document Inquiry menu is also valid.

Candidates applying for the Ph.D. Program with a BA degree must hold a minimum of 3.00/4.00 GPA. The candidates graduated from institutions which apply a scale other than “X out of 4.00” system must provide a conversion table or an official letter of evidence from their institutions.

Two Letters of Recommendation

The candidate must upload the contact information of his/her two reference to the online application form.

a. The writers of recommendation letters are expected to upload them to the online system. When the application is completed, a link will be emailed to the email addresses indicated in the “Recommenders” section of the online application system for them to upload their recommendation letters.

One Photograph

Candidates must upload a passport-sized photo to the online system.

Statement of Personal and Professional Purpose

Letter in English explaining the candidate’s intention to apply to the relevant program. It must not exceed 2 pages and it must be uploaded under “Documents” in the online application system. 

Result for Graduate Program Entrance Exam

Any of the following science test results baring the minimum scores and which are within the validity period as indicated below must be submitted. Photocopies of the documents mentioned below are accepted for application; however, originals will be requested for registration in the case of admission.

a. The score obtained in the exam must be written in the relevant part of the online system and the document showing the declared exam result must be uploaded to the “Documents” section of the online application system. 

b. Exam result must be valid as of the application deadline. 

c. Exam results must be announced by the application deadline. Exams announced after the deadline will not be taken into consideration. 

d. The ALES exam is determined as 70 to be evaluated in the applications of the graduates of the Ph.D. / proficiency in art / specialty in medicine / specialty in dentistry / specialty in veterinary medicine / specialty in pharmacy to graduate programs. This score is directly included in the calculations.

7. Graduate Diploma with Thesis for Candidates who will apply to the Ph.D. Program with a Master’s Diploma: 

a. Candidates applying for the Ph.D. Program with a Master degree must hold an “Master with Thesis” degree. 

b. Candidates whose diplomas or transcripts do not contain such information must provide an official letter of evidence from their institutions. 

c. Holders of “Non-thesis Master degree” may apply to Ph.D. program only upon submission of an official document from their institutions, certifying that they have already been enrolled to the “Non-thesis” program before February 6th, 2013. 

8. Foreign Language Exam Certificate: 

Candidates applying to Ph. D. Program must present proof of proficiency in a language other than their native language. Candidates are expected to have obtained a minimum score in a central foreign language examination or an international examination recognized by the Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK), or an international foreign language exam recognized by the Turkish Measuring, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). a. Candidates must submit score sheets which prove that they meet the minimum English proficiency score indicated in Table 2.

b. The medium of instruction at Sabancı University is English. Therefore, candidates who submit proof of proficiency in a language other than English must also prove their proficiency in English. To do so, one of the conditions below must be met. Please note that this section applies only to candidates who submit proof of proficiency in a foreign language other than English. 

  • Candidates must submit score sheets which prove that they meet the minimum English proficiency score indicated in Table 2. 
  • Graduates of Sabancı University are exempt from submitting an English Proficiency Exam score provided that they apply within 2 years of their graduation. Period between graduation date from the previous program and registration date to the new program should be maximum 2 years. 
  • Candidates who are not exempt from English proficiency requirements and cannot present an English proficiency exam score sheet will be expected to take the Sabancı University English Language Assessment Exam (ELAE) held after the application deadline. The candidates outside the city or abroad are also expected to take the exam. It is recommended that candidates should learn the ELAE exam date from the announcements or ask to Student Resources. The ELAE exam invitation is sent to such candidates by email. There will be no make up for ELAE exam.
  • Turkish candidates with dual citizenship are required to submit a valid language exam result certificate as they are subject to the conditions of application as a Turkish citizen. 
  • Candidates who cannot meet the English proficiency criterion will be required to complete the English preparatory year to continue their Ph.D. program. However, there are no scholarships available for the preparatory year, and thus such candidates will be required to pay the full tuition fee. 

c. The Sabancı University English Language Assessment Exam ELAE Score Sheet does not qualify as a “Proof of Foreign Language Proficiency” under Ph.D. admission requirements. However, candidates who submit proof of proficiency in a language other than English may take the ELAE to meet the English proficiency requirement. 

d. Exam results must be announced by the application deadline. Results that are announced after the application deadline will not be considered. 

e. The “Proof of Language Proficiency” requirement also applies to candidates who are Sabancı University graduates. 

f. Please enter your score in the corresponding field in the online system and upload your score sheet under Documents.
