Gedo International University (GIU)
Gedo International University (GIU) is a higher education foundation that consists of faculties, institutes, schools, and centers as its essential and integral parts.
The idea of founding this academic institution was the result of a long journey of community consultation and mobilization, fundraising activities, round-table, focus group and panel discussions, volunteerism, advocacy, and activism. This was all led by people originally from the local community of the Gedo Region in Somalia, among them lecturers in different universities in and outside of Somalia.
The consultations started in 2009 and on the 14th of May 2015 the university opened its door for the first batch of students. Currently, GIU offers a variety of bachelor’s, diplomas, and certificate programs. This solely a community-driven, funded, and owned initiative. It would have been impossible for the realization of this academic institution without the help of God and the generous contributions of Somali communities both inside and abroad in terms of time, commitment, resources, and energy.
