University of the Bahamas Admission Requirements

Undergraduate (Bachelor) Degree Admission Requirements:

  1. Complete the undergraduate admission application.
  2. Pay a non-refundable processing fee in the form of cash, credit or debit card (VISA, MasterCard, Suncard), money order or bank draft  at the Business Office; (if any)
  3. Submit completed application form, a copy of the processing fee receipt and supporting documents (a copy of valid passport showing passport number, photo identification and expiration date, self-statement and academic credentials including BGCSEs, BJCs, ACT, IB, AP, or SAT, CXCs or other O-level equivalents) to the Office of Recruitment and Admissions;
  4. Request an official transcript be mailed directly from the last school attended to the Office of Recruitment and Admissions, P. O. Box N-4912, Nassau, The Bahamas or P.O. Box F-42766, East Grand Bahama, The Bahamas for applicants wishing to study at the University of The Bahamas-North.

Graduate (Master’s) and Doctoral Degree Admission Requirements:

To be considered for admission into a UB graduate programme, applicants must

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or meet entry level requirements as specified by the degree programme for which they are applying;
  • Possess a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.00 grade-point scale or the minimum cumulative GPA as specified by the degree programme for which they are applying;
  • Complete an interview;
  • Meet any other requirements as stipulated by the specific programme.

Additionally, applicants may be required to submit scores from the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or other standardised tests taken within 12 months of the date of application. Usually, a combined minimum verbal, quantitative and analytical score of 1500 is required.

University of the Bahamas Admission Requirements for International Students

International students must meet direct entry requirements for the degree programme for which they are applying. International applicants must have one of the following:

  • Five BGCSE or equivalent passes including English and Mathematics, a Social Science, a Natural Science and another academic subject with ‘C’ grades or higher.
  • Four BGCSE or equivalent passes with a deficiency in either English or Mathematics, along with a Social Science and a Natural Science subject with ‘C’ grades or higher.
  • A combined score of at least 1000 on the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) if taken during and prior to 2005 or a combined score of at least 1000 on the Mathematics and Verbal components of the SAT if taken after 2005 plus a high school transcript with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher (on a 4.00 scale), inclusive of at least one term of the 12th grade or senior year.
  • A combined score of at least 21 on the Mathematics and Verbal components of the ACT with a cumulative high school GPA of 3.00 or higher (on a 4.00 scale).
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) grade level 4 or higher in English and Mathematics and Advanced Placement (AP) grade level 3 or higher in English and Mathematics with a cumulative high school GPA of 3.00 or higher (on a 4.00 scale).
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for a minimum of two years of high school and one term of the 12th grade or senior year plus placement at Basic College Mathematics and Writing & Rhetoric I on UB’s placement examination.
  • Successful completion of an Academic Enhancement programme at UB or an institution recognised by UB.

BAHAMAS GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS

The Bahamas Government administers several programs that permit Bahamians to access funding for post-secondary purposes. A few are listed below:?

  • Government Guaranteed Scholarship Loans: This program is available to all Bahamians who have been accepted for college studies. Individuals must meet specified qualifications and be able to make requisite repayment schedule. Please collect appropriate forms from the Office of Admissions.
  • Government Scholarships: Government scholarships are merit based scholarships which are available to all Bahamians who excel academically. These awards are highly competitive and students are encouraged to apply early for consideration. Applications are available at the Scholarship Division at the Ministry of Education.
  • Government Grants: Government grants are awarded based on the perceived skills needs of the country. In recent times, grants have been awarded in the areas of teaching and nursing. Successful candidates are typically given funds towards their studies which do not have to be repaid.
  • In-service Awards: These awards are available to government employees who have been accepted for studies at a college or university. Successful candidates receive full tuition payment along with salary payment during their studies. In-service awards are usually reserved to exemplary senior public servants.
