Ez-Zitouna University

Al-Zaytouna Mosque is one of the oldest and most famous mosques in all the countries of Islam. It was founded by Ubaid Allah bin Al-Habhab in the year 116 AH (734 AD). The fame of this Zaytuna Mosque is not only due to the role it played as a mosque for prayer and clinic, as much as it is due to the scientific and cultural role it has played through the ages, since the beginning of the second century AH, when it taught Islamic sciences starting from the year 120 AH -737 AD.

Thus, it is considered the oldest Arab Islamic university that continued to play its role for nearly thirteen consecutive centuries without any interruption. Historian Hassan Hosni Abdel Wahhab confirmed this tradition by saying: “The Zaytuna Mosque is the oldest educational institute for Arabism by birth and the oldest in history.”
