DEPARTMENT OF FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Department of Food Science and Technology (DFST) works with the mission of contributing to the society through the pursuit of education in Food Science and Technology in learning, disseminating knowledge and meeting international standards in research and teaching at the highest level of excellence.

Having realized the qualities and skills required from a food technologist by the food industry today, DFST has designed its syllabus to provide students with a sound theoretical knowledge in food science & technology as well as hands-on experience through practical training in food processing, product development and quality control. Department has already produced 66 graduates in its continuous process of producing skilled graduates to cater the demand in the food industry. Practical component of the degree program includes routine laboratory exercises conducted in the departmental laboratories, and field visits to reputed food processing plants.

DFST is the major contributor to the four year degree, during the first two years, students are taught some basic courses in food science & technology and several courses in related disciplines such as human nutrition, animal science and aquaculture & fisheries and general courses ie. Mathematics & statistics, Information technology, English offered by the other departments of the faculty. During the third year, students follow specialization courses on highly subject specific topics. In the first semester of the final year students are guided to carry out mini research project and in the second semester, the students are assigned to a food processing factory to undergo intensive in-plant training. Or else student can carry out research projects where they can integrate knowledge in the identification, description, analysis and solution of problem with in their specialization.

DEPARTMENT OF  LIVESTOCK AND AVIAN SCIENCES

Together with the improvement in the standards of living in developing countries, the demand for livestock products has increased dramatically in recent years.  This trend is expected to continue such that by the year 2020 the value of animal products will be equal to those from all crops.

Sri Lanka has shown, for example, by more than 600% growth in poultry meat consumption over the last 15 years.  Clearly, there will be an increasing demand for trained personnel to serve in the animal production sector, both locally and abroad.  Such demands will be not only for primary animal production at farm level but in areas such as post-harvest handling and processing, aspects in which skills are presently lacking in Sri Lanka.  These areas include the primary and further processing of milk and meat, good manufacturing practices, quality control and inspection, packaging, storage and transport.

There are several animal-related technologies such as animal feed manufacture and hide & skin technology in which there are no properly trained personnel available at present. In addition, the students will be exposed to the skills, knowledge and experience of scientists available in Research Institutes, Government departments, other universities and the livestock industry to supplement the teaching.  Since the university is located in an area with a high concentration of livestock farms, a strong outreach program will be developed to benefit both farmers and student

Faculty of Medicine (FOM)

The Wayamba University is located at Kuliyapitiya Electorate of Kurunegala District in the North Western Province having over 2.3 Mn. population, which accounts for about 11.6 % of the total population in Sri Lanka.

Establishing a new Faculty of Medicine at a distant  University needs to meet certain basic criteria in view of the scope for medical education such as availability of patients, reasonably developed hospitals for clinical training, a passage between faculty premises and the hospital, recruitment and retention of qualified staff and room availability for sustainable development in future.

The Wayamba university is fortunate in having access to two most developed hospitals in the North Western Province viz. the Teaching Hospital, Kuliyapitiya and the General Hospital, Kurunegala. The faculty is established in a 28 acre land in Labuyaya area on the  Kuliyapitiya –Kurunegala main road.

It would be possible for the Kuliyapitiya Base Hospital to provide clinical training for about 120 medical students during the first 2-3 years until the Professorial Unit is set up and facilities of the hospital are upgraded to that of a teaching hospital so that the latter half of the programme can also be conducted at Kuliyapitiya Hospital itself.

There are fifteen (15) Departments of Study offering 5 year MBBS course. The Departments are: Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Community Medicine & Family Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Microbiology, Parasitology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Psychiatry and Medical Education.
