It is closely linked with the community and is an integral part of the College of Medicine. These relationships provide a unique opportunity replicated in few centres in Africa to study major health issues spanning both community and hospital.

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work: Since its inception in 1995, the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome (MLW) Programme in Blantyre has been a partnership between the College of Medicine (COM) at the University of Malawi, the University of Liverpool and the Wellcome Trust.

Offering Programs:

The MLW Programme aims:

(1) To conduct biomedical research on tropical health problems in a place where those problems occur;

(2) To provide training in research skills for clinical and laboratory scientists both from the host country and abroad;

(3) To strengthen the COM in its capacity to conduct research on health problems of local importance.
