Universidad Nacional de Canindeyú

The beginnings of higher education in the Department of Canindeyú date back to approximately 1988. Until this year there were approximately 40 university professionals in the city of Salto del Guairá who created an Association of University Graduates. One of the issues discussed in the association was to have a university in the Department of Canindeyú, in the city of Salto del Guairá.

One of the members of the Association was the lawyer Luis María Talavera Alegre who in 1992 was elected governor of the Department of Canindeyú. In 1994, in the exercise of his position, he asked the Colonizadora Salto del Guairá of the family of Mr. Carlos Mendes Gonçalves to donate to the government a place for the site of a future university in the city. The Salto del Guairá Colonizer transferred to the Government of Canindeyú a little more than 2.5 hectares in Farm No. 4519, Manzanas 25 and 26 for the purposes requested by the governor.
