Slovenská zdravotnícka univerzita v Bratislave
The Slovak Medical University in Bratislava (SZU) is a proud successor of the tradition of educating health workers in the field of specialized studies as well as lifelong education in Slovakia.
Already on May 1, 1953, the Slovak Institute for the Continuing Education of Doctors was established in Trenčín, which by June 30, 1966 began to create the beginnings of the education of health workers. After the construction of a new building in Bratislava, on July 1, 1966, the institute moved to the capital with a new name – the Institute for Further Education of Doctors and Pharmacists in Bratislava, under which it operated until 1991. It was in the middle of its term, on July 1, 1991, that it was renamed the Institute for further education of healthcare workers, Bratislava. The content and form of the study responded to the needs and requirements of practice, which went hand in hand with the last change in name: on 1 November 1998, the Institute changed to the Slovak Postgraduate Academy of Medicine in Bratislava
Act of the National Council of the Slovak Republic No. 401/2002 Coll. on the establishment of SZU, the Slovak Medical University in Bratislava was established on September 1, 2002 as a university-type state university.
The Slovak Medical University in Bratislava is the only medical university in Slovakia that is monothematically dedicated to education in health professions at all three levels of higher education, and at the same time it is the only institution in the Slovak Republic that, under different names, provides comprehensive education for health workers since 1953.
