University of Garyounis. And the University of Sirte became administratively and financially independent under the name “University of Challenge”

It helps the faculty members to carry out their tasks to the fullest extent (311) male and female teaching assistants in the various departments, and they are on the way to completing their higher studies, similar to their colleagues who were sent by the university (690) male and female students to study abroad, and (164) others continue their higher studies at the university.

Postgraduate studies at the university have yielded, thanks to the efforts of those in charge of them, and with the support of the university administration, where 225 male and female students have obtained a master’s degree in applied disciplines, including scientific and humanities, until the end of the year 2011. Research trends among graduate students, the university is preparing its various libraries to provide sources, references and documents that exceed 100,000 works of these works, and in the same framework the Language Center was established to teach English to graduate students and candidates to study in the same language, with a view to teaching other languages Like Italian, Spanish and German.

Sirte University (جامعة سرت) Admission

New students

The admission and registration process is central and key to many administrative and academic tasks related to students. These tasks can be summarized as follows:

1- Admitting secondary schools graduates in the university by implementing the admission policies approved by the University Board of Directors and distributing the new applicants to the academic programs according to their specializations and  Entry Test Results.

2- Through a close cooperation between the University Registrar Office, faculties’ deanships and other related centers and departments, the Registrar Office proposes the academic programs for students, distribute the lectures’ halls, and  prepare the lectures and exams timetables.

3- Keeping  a record of the students grades and academic reports.

4- Keeping  and updating students’ database  and records,  and providing all the information needed about the syllabi and the requirements for obtaining the undergraduate degrees.

5- Checking and following up studentship grants.

6- Dealing with students’ university accommodation and transportations and signing and renewing contracts for providing these services.

7- Dealing with and following up overseas students paperwork such as credit transfer, admission, residence visas extensions and keeping their personal and academic records.

8- In collaboration with the Students Extra-curricular Activities Office, the Registrar Office prepares and designs some programs and activities for the talented students.

9- The Registrar Office also works very closely with the Social Unit in following up exams in all academic programs and prepares a full report on the progress of these exams at the end of each academic year and/or semester.

University Faculties:

There are fourteen different faculties in the university. Ten of these faculties, namely, the Faculty of Education, Sciences, Arts, Engineering, Agriculture, Law, Economics, Medicine, Nursing, and Densitry are located on the main campus in the city of Sirte. The other four faculties, namely, the Faculty of Education, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, and Medical Technology are located in the city of Al-Jufra (About 250km south of the city of Sirte).

Note:

Sirte University only accepts the following GSSCs in the admission process for any academic program:

General Secondary School Certificate issued from any Libyan, Arab or overseas schools provided that the two latter are accredited by the Quality Assurance Office (Tripoli) through an official correspondence from Sirte University concerning this matter in the following specializations: arts, sciences, Business on the condition that the applicant’s overall grade in the GSSC is more than 65%.

Sirte University also accepts GSSCs from Libyan private schools which are accredited by the Libyan Ministry of Education.

Admission Policies:

In addition to other criterion which have already been listed above, the applicants’ main specialization in the secondary school (i.e. Art, Science etc.) and their overall grades in their GSSC determine, to a large extent, the faculty and department to which they are admitted to. The followings criterion are meant to be simple guidelines on how students are selected in various faculties and departments in the admission process.

Specialized Secondary School (Science Stream)

Students who are specialized in Biology stream and got more than 85% in their GSSC are admitted in the Faculty of Medicine or Dentistry whereas those who got less than 65% are admitted in the faculties of Medical Technology, Nursing, Sciences, Agriculture, education (biology department), or Arts and Sciences (Biology Department)

Students who are specialized in Basic Sciences stream and their overall score ranges from 65% to 74%  can be admitted in the faculties of Sciences, Arts & Sciences (in the departments such as Physics, Mathematics, Computer or Engineering Sciences) whereas those who got between 75% to 84% can be accepted in the Faculty of Engineering.

As for students who are specialized in Economics stream and got 65% or more can be admitted in the faculties of Economics or Business Administration.

 Specialized Secondary School (Arts stream)

Students who are specialized in Arabic and their overall grade in their GSSC is more than 75% can be admitted in the Faculty of Law whereas those who are specialized Sociology and got 65% or above can be admitted in the Faculties of Law or Arts and Education. As for students whose main stream is in English and got 65% or more can be admitted in the Faculties of Arts or Education.

Specialized Secondary School (Sociology, Arabic and Economics Streams)

Students who are specialized in the three streams listed above and got between 50% to 64% can be admitted in the faculties which follow a part-time study system.

Required Documents for Admission

Applicants must attend in person and bring the following documents:

  • General secondary school Certificate (Original)
  • Birth certificate
  • Father’s birth certificate
  • Certificate of Residence
  • Certificate of Conduct
  • Heath Certificate
  • Eight passport size photographs
  • Bank account (to be used for the studentship grants)
  • A copy of photographic ID card such as driving license or passport(to be used for the studentship grants)
  • A completed registration form
  • Suspension file

Forming an admission committee headed by the University Registrar to do the followings:

  • Announce the date, place and time for receiving applications (all applicants must submit their application before the deadline)
  • Receiving and checking all applications with all the required documents and informing students of the faculties to which they were admitted to according to their scores in their GCSEs, the capacity of the each academic program and admission rules.
  • Running entry tests if the number of applicants exceeds the capacity of the academic programs.
  • Preparing wishes forms and directing students to the pay the registration fees specified by the university’s regulations.
  • Preparing lists of students according to the faculty and the academic program they have been accepted in.
  • Declaring the entry tests results through the University Registrar Office and informing the applicants of the academic programs they have been admitted to according to their GSSCs grades, the capacity of the academic programs and the admission policies.
  • Approving lists of successful applicants.
  • Making general statistics about the successful applicants.
  • Issuing students’ university cards and registration numbers.
  • Forwarding lists of successful applicants for official approval by the University President.
  • Announcing the beginning of study for the freshers (new students).

Notes:

Registration forms must by filled out by the applicants and they must acknowledge that all information provided are credible and accurate. Moreover,  in addition to preserving the general admission policies, applicants must fill out a specifically designated form requesting to join the University of Sirte within the time of admission. Applicants should be aware that any incomplete application will not considered. Moreover, applicants should also be aware that any change of specializations/major will not be considered after the deadline of receiving applications has passed.
