José Simeón Cañas Central American University
The Central American University “José Simeón Cañas”, known as UCA, was founded in September 1965, in the context of the optimism of the development decade.
A group of Catholic citizens approached the Government and the Society of Jesus to promote the establishment of a second university. They wanted to create an alternative to the University of El Salvador to professionally train graduates of Catholic schools.
The university conceived by this group of people was private, with capital and shares, and aimed at satisfying the demands of an elite professionalizing education. They considered that a Catholic university conceived in these terms would contribute greatly to the cultural advancement of the Salvadoran people. To nuance the elitism, they proposed to offer some scholarships.
